CMYK

Stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and black which are the four so-called process colours that are used in four-colour printed printing. They represent the subtractive colour model, where a combination of 100% of each component yields black and 0% of each yields white. Cyan, magenta, and yellow are the subtractive complements of red, green, and blue respectively (from RGB additive color model). RGB monitors emit light, but inked paper absorbs or reflects specific wavelengths. Cyan, magenta and yellow pigments serve as filters, subtracting varying degrees of red, green and blue from white light to produce a selective range of spectral colours.

Copyright

Copyright is a protection that covers published and unpublished literary, scientific and artistic works, whatever the form of expression, provided such works are fixed in a tangible or material form. Copyright laws grant the creator the exclusive right to reproduce, prepare derivative works, distribute, perform and display the work publicly. Exclusive means only the creator of the work

Exclusive stock agency

An exclusive stock agency is a stock agency that requires you to sell your images only on that stock photography site. The images can not be commercialized elsewhere.

DPI

Stands for dots per inch. This measures the resolution or the number of dots in a stock photo that a printer can print or the number displayed on a screen per inch both horizontally and vertically, and therefore is also an indicator of quality of output. As an example, a 600 dpi printer can print 360,000 (600 by 600) dots on one square inch of paper.

Interpolation

The process of increasing the resolution of a digital stock photograph or image.

JPEG

Stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group and is the most common compressed standard for high resolution stock photos. Also called JPG. It was developed by a group of experts that develops and maintains standards for a suite of compression algorithms for computer image files and it is one of the most popular digital image formats in stock photography industry. It is a is a compressed format, with some loss of quality during compression.

PICT

PICT is a stock image file format developed by Apple Computer, Inc. for use on Macintosh computers. The PICT format is adequate for storing and displaying data at 72 dpi, using the Macintosh screen, but is not sophisticated enough for higher-quality work.

RGB

An additive color model, where 0% of each component yields black and 100% of each component yields white. Computer monitors, screens and TVs emit colour as RGB (Red, Green, and Blue) light. Although all colours of the visible spectrum can be produced by merging red, green and blue light, monitors are capable of displaying only a limited gamut of the visible spectrum. Abbreviation for red, green, blue; the colors used in displays and input devices. Red, green and blue are the additive complements of cyan, magenta, and yellow from the CMYK color model. Most stock images are supplied as RGB.

Rights manged license

Rights managed license is the oposite of royalty-free license. A rights-managed photo needs a specific license stating the audience and material surrounding the photo.

Royalty-free is a type of a stock photo license that provides for the unlimited use of a photo in any media defined in the licensing terms. “Royalty-free” is the opposite of “rights-managed.” A rights-managed photo needs a specific license stating the audience and material surrounding the photo.

Stock photography

Stock photography is photography or other imagery of common landmarks, objects, concepts, people, and events that can be used and reused for a variety of commercial purposes. Stock photography can be searched by keyword and remains cataloged until purchased by a customer. Usually stock photography means commercial photography.
